Skin Cancer Awareness

Know Your Skin. Know the Signs.

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer — yet it is highly treatable when caught at an early stage. Education and regular self-checks are your first line of defence.

🔬

What is Melanoma?

Melanoma develops in the cells (melanocytes) that give skin its colour. It can appear as a new mole or a change in an existing one. Although it accounts for only about 1% of skin cancers, it causes the majority of skin cancer deaths — making early detection critical.

⚠️

Types of Skin Cancer

The three most common types are Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) — the most common and least dangerous — Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), and Melanoma, the most aggressive form. Non-melanoma skin cancers are highly treatable when detected early.

☀️

Risk Factors to Know

Key risk factors include excessive UV exposure (sun or tanning beds), fair skin or a history of sunburn, a large number of moles, family history of skin cancer, and a weakened immune system. Anyone can develop skin cancer — regardless of skin tone.

The ABCDE Rule — How to Self-Check Your Moles

Dermatologists use the ABCDE criteria as a simple self-examination guide. If you notice any of these warning signs, see a dermatologist promptly.

A
Asymmetry
One half doesn't match the other
B
Border
Irregular, ragged, or blurred edges
C
Colour
Multiple shades or uneven colour
D
Diameter
Larger than 6mm (pencil eraser)
E
Evolving
Changing in size, shape, or colour

Melanoma Survival Rate: Stage Matters

Stage 1 — Localised (caught early) ~98% 5-year survival
Stage 4 — Metastatic (spread) <20% 5-year survival
